Midjourney V8.2 Is Here. What’s New and Is It Better Than V8.1?

Midjourney V8.2 is officially here, approximately three months after V8.1 arrived.

Released on July 24, 2026, V8.2 is now the default model in Midjourney, right out of the box. However, this is not a giant update with a lot of new features. It mainly improves image quality, consistency, aesthetics, and Personalization. It’s incremental.

Midjourney says images should look more creative, bold, sophisticated, edgy, and fresh. Those are some confident adjectives, and we’re going to put them to the test later in this article.

The update also arrives at an awkward time for Midjourney. Many users feel the platform is falling behind, and some have already moved much of their image-generation work to ChatGPT Image and/or Nano Banana Pro. For some tasks, Run The Prompts already has. Both are easier for the average person to understand and use, while Midjourney continues releasing relatively incremental improvements (for the most part).

Midjourney V8.2 is better than V8.1, but it does little to answer the growing concern that Midjourney is losing the AI image battle.

Later in the article, I tested Midjourney V8.1 vs. V8.2 using identical prompts to see whether the difference is noticeable. You won’t want to miss that.

Overall, this is a refinement update. Midjourney gave its existing model a haircut, bought it a nicer shirt, shaved its dirty mustache, and sent it back into the world.

What’s New in Midjourney V8.2?

Midjourney V8.2 focuses on three areas:

• Aesthetics
• Image quality
• Personalization

The biggest promise is more reliable quality.

Midjourney says the occasional bad image within a batch should appear a lot less often. In theory, you should receive four good options more consistently, instead of three decent images and one disaster that appears to have been generated during an electrical fire.

Images should also look more creative, bold, and visually sophisticated. These descriptions are subjective, so the actual difference will depend heavily on your prompts, glasses, and preferred style.

Midjourney V8.1 vs. V8.2 Image and Prompt Examples

So, is Midjourney V8.2 noticeably better than Midjourney V8.1?

I generated images with both versions using identical prompts. 

Here are the Midjourney V8.1 vs. V8.2 results.

Example #1: Eye of the Tiger

Prompt:

In my opinion, V8.2 won this one, but not by a huge amount. It followed the prompt a bit better by using shadows in an interesting way (per the prompt), and the reflections in the tiger’s eye are more detailed and vivid.

Example #2: Superhero Sauce

Prompt:

Highly detailed 1990s comic book character, bold ink pen, cell shaded, greens and blacks, surrealism --chaos 10 --ar 2:1 --profile ey3hqdj --stylize 300 --hd

V8.2 definitely won this one. Keep in mind that this prompt included my profile code, which V8.2 claims it does better work with vs. V8.1. In my testing… it did. This image is amazingly detailed, and it somehow took just a few seconds for the robot to make it.

Example #3: Just Another Day

Prompt:

multiple individual window frames of different apartments, are brightly lit against a dark, featureless background. inside, each window presents a minimalist scene. many show human figures in silhouette or flat color profiles, performing daily tasks such as reading, pointing a gun, or simply standing. objects like a guitar, a bed, and a table lamp are also visible. the window interiors are bathed in a spectrum of colors including greens, reds, yellows, and blues, giving each frame a unique glow. --chaos 10 --ar 6:5 --profile ey3hqdj --stylize 200 --weird 6 --hd

I like V8.1 better in this example. V8.2 did a fine job, but V8.1 just nailed the overall look.

Based on these comparisons, V8.2 does not appear to be a dramatic visual leap over V8.1, but it is a step forward.

That doesn’t mean the update failed. Midjourney is promising better consistency across many generations, not a massive transformation every time you run one prompt.

If fewer images come out weak, strangely composed, or noticeably worse than the rest of the batch, V8.2 could still save frequent users plenty of rerolls.

Just don’t expect every V8.2 image to kick its V8.1 counterpart tumbling down a flight of stairs. It’s been hit or miss.

Better Midjourney Personalization

Personalization received one of the biggest improvements in V8.2.

Midjourney uses your image ratings and selections to learn which colors, compositions, subjects, and artistic styles you prefer. V8.2 should understand those preferences more accurately, especially if you have rated or selected a large number of images.

Your existing Global V7 Personalization Profile works with V8.2, so you do not need to start over. You can also create profiles specifically for V8, although those V8 profiles cannot currently be used with V7. We’d recommend creating one for V8.

How to Use Midjourney V8.2

V8.2 is now the default model, so you may already be using it.

To confirm, open the settings beside the Imagine bar and select V8.2 under the model version options.

You can also add this parameter to your prompt:

–v 8.2

For a direct comparison, run the same prompt again with:

–v 8.1

Wrapping It Up

Midjourney is in a tough spot. And it’s clear that they’re trying to punch their way out, but a bit more time at the gym is still needed.

Midjourney V8.2 improves image quality, consistency, and Personalization without introducing many new features.

Based on my Midjourney V8.1 vs. V8.2 examples, this looks like a decent upgrade. The differences may not smack you in the face, but more reliable batches could still make V8.2 the better everyday model.

The bigger question is what happens to Midjourney from here. ChatGPT Image and Nano Banana Pro are powerful, easier to use, and already attracting people who previously relied on Midjourney. If Midjourney continues releasing incremental updates while remaining more difficult for the average person to understand, V8.2 probably will not be enough to win those users back.
