Midjourney V8.1 Is Here & It Makes Midjourney Exciting Again

Midjourney hasn’t excited me much over the past year, at least not enough to make me want to stop what I was doing and write about it quickly. That changed with Midjourney V8.1 Alpha.

In fact, this is the first Run The Prompts Midjourney post since February, when we covered Midjourney’s Niji v7.

Before people start calling it the wrong thing, here is the important part. This is V8.1 Alpha, not a finalized public release called “Midjourney 8.1.” That will come later, so be patient, okay?

It launched on April 14, 2026, and right now it only lives on alpha.midjourney.com. You can’t play with it on the main Midjourney site yet, and it’s not in Discord either. Midjourney also says this version is still early, which is slang for saying things may change quite a bit during testing. So let’s test it.

Even with that said, this release was too cool not to share.

Let’s party.

What Changed in Midjourney v8.1 Alpha?

Here is the short(ish) version of what stands out in V8.1 Alpha:

  1. V8.1 Alpha keeps a similar overall look to V7
Midjourney says V8.1 Alpha has a similar aesthetic to V7, so this is not the kind of update where everything suddenly looks completely different. But in my testing, it looks a lot better.
  2. It adds a few useful tools
V8.1 Alpha includes Image Prompts, a new Prompt Shortener, and an updated Describe tool.
  3. The alpha interface is supposed to be easier to work with
The UI gives you quicker access to settings, image references, personalization profiles, moodboards, and a grid view. In theory, that should make the workflow faster and less annoying. Personally, I still have not fully gotten used to it yet, so I am not ready to sit here and pretend it instantly made my life better.
  4. HD images now come out at 2K by default
V8.1 Alpha generates default HD images at 2K resolution, which means you can get higher-resolution results without needing a separate upscale step. Although this is obvious, it also means they will take up more space.
  5. HD and SD have different GPU costs
Midjourney says HD costs 1.33 GPU minutes, while SD costs less than 1 GPU minute, so the better output comes at a slightly higher cost.
  6. Older personalization profiles still work
V7 Personalization profiles are compatible with V8.1 Alpha, which should make the transition easier if you already have things set up the way you like. And you probably do.
  7. The Editor still has an older limitation
Images from V8.1 Alpha can be opened in the Editor, but the Editor itself still runs on older models for now.
  8. Seed consistency is much stronger
Midjourney says seeds are 99% identical in V8.1 Alpha, which is a big deal for anyone who likes testing small prompt changes and comparing results more reliably.
  9. Images feel larger than life now
Although it’s hard to describe, the images you get from Midjourney v8.1 just feel larger than any other version I’ve used. You’ll see.
  10. V8.1 can handle a LOT of detail like a pro
Check out the image examples and prompts below, and you’ll notice that things have gotten much more detailed, almost to an uncanny level.

Wrapping It Up

Midjourney V8.1 Alpha looks like an early release with big potential. The overall look stays fairly close to V7, but the improved seed consistency, built-in 2K HD output, and added tools already make this alpha worth paying attention to.

It is still early, and Midjourney has been clear that a lot may change during testing. Still, if this is the direction things are heading, V8.1 Alpha gives us a solid preview of what may be coming next.
