Midjourney Niji v7 landed in January 2026. If you create anime-style art, stylized illustrations, or line work for products, this update will matter to you.
Niji v6 had its moment, but there was a two-year gap before this release. Expectations were high, people were restless, and lines were messy.
So, the real question is simple.
Was it worth it? Let’s get into that.
Let’s party.

What is Midjourney Niji v7?
Niji v7 is Midjourney’s anime-focused model developed with Spellbrush. It leans into eastern illustration aesthetics while still handling a wide range of stylized, non-anime looks.
It replaces the Niji v6 workflow. And the jump is noticeable.
You’ve got two easy ways to use it:
- Open Midjourney settings and select Niji 7 from the version dropdown.
- Or just add –niji 7 to the end of your prompt.
That’s it. No complicated setup. No secret handshake.
Niji V7 vs. Niji V6 – What Improved?
Let’s talk about what shows up on your screen, because that’s what counts. Also, be sure to check out our classic post about Niji V6, which includes a ton of great prompts that still hold up even today with the newest version.
1. Stronger Line Work
Lines are cleaner, more consistent, and have less stray noise.
If you create character art or line art for products like coloring books, this is a big deal. You spend less time fixing crap. More time shipping and more time for naps.
2. Better, Flatter Finish
Niji v7 often produces a beautiful, professional look right out of the gate.
Fewer random strokes and less visual clutter… it feels tighter and more intentional.
3. Better Color Handling
Colors are brighter when they should be. Reflections and highlights look more controlled.
Less mud. More clarity.
4. Higher Detail Fidelity
Eyes, reflections, textures, background elements…
They look intentional now. Not like the model guessed and hoped you wouldn’t zoom in.
5. Complex Prompts Behave Better
This is a big one: longer prompts are followed more reliably.
If you describe five elements in a scene, you’re more likely to get all five. Composition sticks closer to what you asked for.
That alone saves time.
Images that used to need heavy cleanup often come out nearly finished. If you’re building a brand aesthetic or selling assets, consistency like that matters a lot.
Line Art, Coloring Books, and Selling Your Work
Here’s where things get practical.
Niji v7 is very good at producing line art, especially when you push it toward vector-style outputs.
If you want to sell black line artwork for coloring books, decals, or vector tracing, start your prompt with phrases like:
- “Adobe Illustrator black line outline”
- “Vector line art”
Keep stylize value low, something like –stylize 50.
One important note: if you’re truly planning to sell the work you created in Midjourney, check with your lawyer first. Awesome line art is powerful. Legal trouble sucks.
Style References in Niji 7
Niji v7 supports style reference images and style reference codes (get 25 awesome SREF codes here). It even supports older-style references from previous versions.
And here’s a small trick.
Add –sref random to the end of a prompt, just like you do with the base version of Midjourney 7.
You’ll get unexpected stylistic variations. Sometimes strange. Sometimes brilliant.
It’s a fast way to explore new aesthetics or iterate on a character look without rewriting your entire prompt.
What About Animation?
Quick animate loops built from Niji v7 outputs keep the improved reflections and environmental details intact.
Here’s a great example:
I encourage you to experiment with Midjourney videos for Niji.
