If you’re looking for the best API for OpenClaw right now, Venice AI’s API deserves a serious look.
Many OpenClaw users were happy with using their Claude subscription with OpenClaw until that path ended… Claude banned it. And once that happened, plenty of people were left asking the same question: what now? Is my life over?
That’s where Venice AI’s API comes in.
For me, Venice API is one of the best alternatives to using Claude for OpenClaw because it solves several problems at once.
Apparently, it does for a lot of other people, too. Just look at what’s happening to the API usage through March 2026!

Why Venice’s API Works Well With OpenClaw
OpenClaw users usually want a few simple things: strong model access, reasonable pricing, stable connections, and privacy.
Venice checks those boxes.
1. You get access to a huge range of APIs and models in one place, which makes life easier if you like testing different setups without juggling a bunch of API keys. I still have not run into a model I personally wanted that Venice did not offer.
2. The pricing can be a bit higher than going straight to the source, but it is still reasonable for the convenience and privacy.
3. Another nice touch is the token rollover. With a monthly subscription, unused tokens roll over for three months. That helps when one month is quiet, and the next month your agents decide to act like complete maniacs.
A Strong Alternative to Claude Code for OpenClaw
If you were using Claude Code with OpenClaw before it was banned, Venice’s API makes a lot of sense as a replacement, specifically with this setup: MiniMax or a Claude model as your main agent, and alternative models for your other agents (example: GLM 5.1 for coding).
Here’s an example of how I’m leveraging a bunch of different models at once on top of Claude, all from the Venice API. This data is easily viewable in the settings dashboard.
This alternative is, of course, not 100% the same or as generous with credit usage as the original Claude Code subscription setup, but you still get the benefit of using a Claude model with your main agent and very capable but much lower-cost models with your other agents.
Or, you could just use Claude models for everything via Venice if you really wanted to. The cost would just stack up quickly, so I don’t recommend it.
Venice API vs. OpenRouter
Venice and OpenRouter both give you access to a lot of models all at once with one API key.
The bigger difference is privacy.
Venice is the more privacy-focused option, which matters if you are running agents or handling sensitive data, such as business information or personal prompts. They do not log your prompts and responses, and they do not store your data. That makes it feel a lot closer to a private setup than a typical middleman API service.
If privacy matters a lot to you, that alone may be enough to choose Venice over OpenRouter.
With that said, don’t think you can use a Claude model in Venice without Anthropic potentially seeing your data. For OpenAI, Anthropic, and other model makers, your data through Venice is anonymized.
So, Sam Altman could technically see your data, but he would have no idea where the data came from (in this case… you). Which is technically as private as you’re going to get with using a ChatGPT or Anthropic model, so it’s still a win. Just needed to clear that up.

Spending Safeguards for Your API Setup
This is a big one. Really big.
Venice includes solid billing controls, which is exactly what you want when agents are involved. You can set a hard daily cap at the API level (example below), and you can also just buy a bit of tokens at a time (like $10 or whatever). I do both.

The cash limits give you a real safety net. I do not want to spend more than I planned, and I definitely do not want an agent getting carried away and torching my tokens. If it ever does, I won’t be laughing on the way to the bank, so I’ll stop it before it can even happen with Venice’s spending caps.
