I’ve always hated shopping for clothes.
Always.
And if you’re reading this article, you probably do too.
Ever since I was a kid, it felt like a nightmare wrapped in a bright fluorescent dressing room. Too many options, too many annoying people, too much horrible corporate pop music in the background, and just too much of everything. Just a huge, stressful, waste-of-time type of experience.
And I’m picky. Like, really picky.
So the other day, I needed a shirt. Just a single shirt. That’s it. But I didn’t want to spend a bunch of time wandering around the mall, dodging people, or dealing with annoying salespeople. Or even sifting through clothing retailer websites, for that matter.
Then I had an idea.
Why not just get ChatGPT to do the heavy lifting so I could get in, get out, and get on with my life?
We already made ChatGPT o3 plan dates and activities with friends, so this was a sensible next step.
My Thought Process
Here’s what I did:
I wrote a ChatGPT prompt that would:
• Find me exactly what I needed
• Tell me where to get it locally (or online if I want)
• Make sure it fits my style, body type, and budget
• Save me time so I could go back to doing literally anything else
And it worked. I got a cool shirt in record time. It worked so well that I’m sharing it here for you to steal.
ChatGPT Prompt: Clothes Shopping Life Hack
All you have to do is fill in a few details. It won’t take you longer than a few minutes. Modify it however you’d like. Then copy and paste it into ChatGPT.
Copy/Paste into ChatGPT:
Act as a fashion and clothing expert.
-I want to buy some new clothes at [optional: mall or store name] in [City, State].
-I have a budget of between [starting amount] and [ceiling amount].
-I am [age] years old. I am a [man/woman].
-I have [hair color] hair and [eye color] eyes.
-The type of clothes I like are usually [describe your desired style].
-I’m specifically looking for a [list whatever you need: i.e., shirt, jeans, shoes, etc.].
-My body type is [skinny/muscular/average/overweight/obese].
-You should also note that [optional: add any other details or notes].
Which store(s) should I go to (if I didn’t already tell you), and which items should I buy, specifically?
Provide actionable recommendations, and break everything down for me. Include an easy-to-follow table in your response.
That’s it.
I used ChatGPT o3 for this, and it worked great. ChatGPT o3-Pro would work even better. If you don’t have access to either, that’s fine, but I highly suggest using a “reasoning” model to do this task. Also, obviously, the model needs internet access.

Use ChatGPT in the Dressing Room Too
Here’s a bonus move most people don’t even consider.
Take your robot into the dressing room.
If you’re trying clothes on and want an opinion, take a quick mirror picture (as lame as that sounds) and upload it in your ChatGPT chat. Then ask:
“Does this fit well for my body type and purpose, or should I try a different style or size?”
It’ll give you surprisingly accurate feedback. Things like:
• “The shoulders look too tight. Try a bigger size.”
• “The color is good for you, but the length is off.”
• “You’re really asking a chatbot for style advice? What the hell is wrong with you?”
Well, not the last one.
I did this, and it made the process so much faster. And yeah, it might sound a little dumb, but it’s way better than trying to get a friend to help you shop.
Why This Matters
You might think this is a small thing.
It is, but small things add up.
Having clothes that fit and look good means you’ll feel better about your life, whether you’re going on dates, showing up to work with a hangover, or just heading to a bar with friends to embarrass yourself.
All with the power of a single prompt. What a time to be alive, right?
