OpenAI just released “Projects” for ChatGPT, and it’s a nice bonus release that comes in the middle of their “12 days of Gift-mas” event.
Ever wished you could give your ChatGPT sessions a little more structure? With the Projects feature, it can help with organizing, tracking, and completing projects, whether you’re hustling hard at work or just tackling your busy (yet probably mundane) life at home.
But what exactly is it? And how can you get the most out of it? Let’s dig in.

What is ChatGPT’s “Projects” Feature?
At its core, ChatGPT Projects are like folders for your ChatGPT experience. They group related chats, files, and custom instructions into one neat package, creating an organized workspace tailored to your needs. Whether you’re juggling multiple clients, planning an overpriced wedding, or brainstorming your next side hustle failure, Projects let you manage it all without losing your mind—or your notes.
Projects work independently of GPTs. While GPTs connect with APIs and require custom setups, Projects are all about organization and simplicity. They’re faster to set up and better for some use cases.
Currently exclusive to Plus, Pro, and Teams users, Projects will be rolled out to free-tier users soon and to Enterprise and Edu users early next year.
Why Should You Care About ChatGPT Projects?
Have you ever scrolled through your endless list of disorganized brain vomit chats? There you go, now you have a reason to leverage Projects. Instead of losing track of your “brilliant ideas” or repeatedly asking ChatGPT the same question (we’ve all been there), you can keep everything in one place.
If you’re someone who juggles multiple hats—designer, entrepreneur, daddy, mommy, meal prepper, armchair politician—you probably know the chaos of having a million tabs open (in your browser and your brain). Projects bring order to that unnecessary chaos.
Key Projects Features to Enjoy
- Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive Support
Although you can’t add these files to the actual Project itself, you can call upon whatever file you want in either drive for specific chats. - Customization
Rename projects, pick one of 16 colors (because colors matter), and upload files or instructions to tailor your experience. - Chat Integration
Remember that brilliant idea you had two months ago? You can add previous chats to a Project, ensuring continuity without scrolling endlessly through your chat history. - User-Friendly Design
Unlike some overly complex tools, Projects keep things simple. Want to use it just to organize chats? Go for it. Adding files and instructions is entirely optional.
Real-Life Use Cases for ChatGPT Projects
At Work
- Content Creation
Writers and digital marketers can build a Project for each campaign, keeping drafts, research, and brainstorming sessions in one place. - Product Development
Manage everything from feature specs to design ideas in separate chats. It’s like having your personal R&D department. - Client Management
One ChatGPT Project per client? Yes, please. Store meeting notes, strategies, and deliverable drafts for easy access.
At Home
- Event Planning
From overzealous birthdays to overpriced weddings, Projects handle guest lists, budgets, and itineraries with ease. - DIY Mastery
Whether it’s a garage project or a photography project, keep measurements, tutorials, guides, and plans in one spot. And after you botch it and your house burns down, the data still lives in the cloud, so you’re good. - Vacation Planning
Add your flight itinerary, hotel room bookings, restaurant lists, and anything else you can think of to easily ping ChatGPT whenever you have a question about your upcoming trip.
Creative Stuff
- Book Writing
Outline chapters, develop characters, and store research—all in one Project. ChatGPT can even double as your editor and proofreader. - Gaming
Strategy tips, walkthroughs, cheat codes, and notes for your favorite games. Your gamer friends might even thank you. But let’s be real, they probably won’t care.
A Few Limitations of Projects
As great as Projects are, there’s currently no way to share them with others. Not good. Collaboration options are likely on OpenAI’s roadmap, but for now, Projects are a solo endeavor. Also, remember that GPTs and Projects don’t overlap. Chats with GPTs can’t live in your Projects, so plan accordingly. Lastly, at least for now, there is no real-time Google Drive integration into your Projects, but you can attach files from it on a per-chat basis.
Wrapping It Up
This isn’t just about organization; it’s about enhancing how we work and live. Projects let you focus on what matters by reducing digital clutter. Whether you’re managing a team, running a chaotic household, or pursuing a hobby, Projects make ChatGPT even better than before.
It’s not a full game-changing feature, but it’s a nice little bonus.
